Valleria was born in 1339 DR to Thor, King of the Tribe of the Bear in Icewind Dale.
With two brothers born before her and three after, Thorsdottir was given the least of his attention. But such was the way of the Reghedmen tribes; men fought and hunter while women gathered and cooked. If not for her two older brothers, Ragnar and Baulgrun, encouraging her when she would try to wield their weapons as a child, she would probably have spent her days around the cook-fire. Instead, Ragnar taught her the sword and shield, while Baulgrun instructed her in the spear and axe.
While neither of her parents approved of her brothers teaching her to fight, Thor was too busy to care much and Helga never spoke out against her sons.
In 1351 DR, the barbarian tribes of the North allied to attack the Ten Towns a conquer them. Guided by the two kings Beorg (Tribe of Wolf) and the ruthless Heafstaag (Tribe of the Elk), the barbarians attack the towns.
However, the men of the towns were forewarned and united to stop the barbarians. A threefold trap lay in wait at Bryn Shander for the main host of the tribes. Inside the city walls stood the combined forces of Bryn Shander, Caer-Konig, and Caer-Dineval, armed with bows and hot oil. Outnumbered, the barbarians turned back and found the way blocked by Bruenor’s dwarves.
After the disastrous defeat of the barbarian tribes by the citizens of the Ten Towns at the Battle of Bryn Shander, the Tribe of the Bear retreated deep into the tundra to lick its wounds. Val’s father, Thor, had been wounded and the tribe had lost most of its warriors in the battle, including Ragnar and Baulgrun. With more than three quarters of the tribes males dead and her father wounded, Valleria took it upon herself to organize hunts to feed the tribe.
After several successful hunting trips to bring back caribou, she had earned equal measures of respect and resentment from the men of the tribe. When Thor recovered and could walk again, he found that his daughter to be a troublesome point of contention amongst the tribe. Deciding to kill two birds with one stone, he offered Valleria as a wife to Larch, King of the Tribe of the Boar, in return for an alliance.
Before the offer could be answered, Valleria chose to flee Icewind Dale rather than accept the life of an arranged marriage.
